Florescent Red Hot Dogs

So, in the past month, I’ve ventured out to one new restaurant a week.  I realized at this week’s restaurant that I’ve been adventurous to a point.  I may have been venturing out of my comfort zone by intentionally going places where my language abilities are limited, but I’ve been ordering “safe” things like pizza, ham panninis, or brochettes (beef or chicken cooked on skewers).  The other day when I was perusing the menu for Chez-Katia, I realized there’s a whole world out there I’m missing.  I was intrigued by the Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame and wondered, “What the heck is that?”  While I decided to go with something different (a Chwarma which I’ve never had before but Brian had it so he told me what was in it: beef or chicken, a sauce, tomatoes and french fries (yes french fries) all in a wrap or burrito), I’ve since learned that it’s a sandwich with cheese and ham with an egg added if you order the Madame version – click here for pictures on wikipedia.  Burger King move on over for one’s daily cholesterol needs!

Of course, I can’t forget to mention the florescent red hot dogs.  I really should have taken a picture.  Yesterday, I took the kids to a restaurant we visited as a family for the first time on the weekend.  Brian was at a retreat and with John Philip’s soccer practice ending at 4:45 it was just too late to make dinner.  So, we went to La Gondole which is nearby and has a children’s play area in the back section.   With Matty’s milk allergy I had to order something safe (in the land of cheese and butter) and figured a hot dog would be a safe bet.  He’s also gotten VERY picky in his eating habits (a sad good bye to the baby and toddler who ate almost any meal put in front of him) so I figured I had scored.  Not so much…when it’s literally florescent red.  I cut it up for him (did I mention that the hot dog had fries in it?) but he didn’t eat it and I couldn’t blame him.  I wouldn’t have eaten for fear of acquiring the ability to glow in the dark! 🙂

Lastly, I’m starting to think I was french in a former life.  Two very french breakfasts here are a freshly baked baguette with butter (yum) and a butter pastery filled with chocolate and chocolate chips (even yummier).  Although, I guess our trip to Paris in April will be the true test of that theory!
